I got mine done in January of 98 for a belated birthday present from
my older sister. She got her navel done (she had been holding out
because she thinks bellybuttons are pretty damn passe). At the same
time my best friend got another set of holes in her ears.
I went in last and it was awesome! It was my first professional body
piercing (I had done my own navel and ears plenty of times), with the
whole atmosphere and everything. Everyone had told me that the septum
is one of the most painful places to get pierced. Since I hadn't had
anything else to compare it to, I didn't really think it was that bad.
It hurt worse after I got it and I was trying to blow my nose and such.
The closest I can explain the pain to is if one were to rip all of
one's nosehairs out at once.
The rush of adrenaline was something else, too. I didn't get the same
thing when I got my tongue pierced, so maybe it's a
first-time/de-virginizing thing.
The place I went to was Rings of Fire in Spokane, WA; I think it was
the perfect place for my first piercing because it had the right
atmosphere in addition to being very clean and professional.
