My friend Hilary and I decided that we wanted to get our tongues pierced one day while we were sitting around eating tacos. So as soon as we were done with our dinner, we picked up another friend for moral support and drove to Cowpok in Buffalo, NY. The guy that pierced us was very cool. He explained everything and then led us into the back room where we decided that Hil would go first ( she's a pain wuss). I held her hand as she sat in the chair with her tongue hanging out and drool dribbling down her chin. He pierced her and then it was my turn. He showed me the autoclave and made sure that I knew that everything had just been sterilized. I stuck out my tongue and he marked it with a black marker. He then told me to take a deep breath and bang, it was over like that. He screwed in the ball and I was piereced. I felt a little light headed afterward, which was a little weird since I'm not usually like that ,and there was a little bit of blood, but that only lasted a minute or two. My tongue took about three weeks to heal completely ( with no swelling left). The tragic part of my story happens on Easter, about four months after my pierceing. I was at Easter dinner at my aunt's house and my mother decided that she should bring up the subject of my pierceing in the middle of our meal. She said, why don't you show everyone what you've done to your tongue! So I stuck out my tongue as my entire family gasped in disbelief. I can take it out, It's no big deal, I said, Well I took the barbell out and finished my dinner. When I was done I went in the bathroom to put it back in, and it had already closed! I went through withdrawl for a few weeks and then forgot about it. Then, just this past December, almost two years since the original pierceing, I was skipping class ( not a good idea ) and hanging out in my friend's dorm room when she talked me into going to American Skin Art in Tonawanda NY to have my tongue repierced while she got her eyebrow done. So once again, I went off to be pierced on the spur of the moment. They were also very good at American Skin Art. The woman explained everything to me and before I knew it, I was pierced again. This time around. It healed much faster. There was no blood and less swelling. I love it. The only advice that I have is don't try to eat solids before you're ready. It will only irritate it and make the pierceing take longer to heal. Oh, also, get a little bottle of Listerine ( cool mint is best ) and carry it with you where ever you go. If it's too strong, dilute it with a little water. It still works, but it won't burn as much. If your unsure about getting your tongue pierced, just do it! It's lots of fun and I swear when I say that it really doesn't hurt.
